Grow a garden filled with fresh Arugula herbs, from freshly harvested Eruca sativa herb seeds. Arugula Roquette is a leafy green herb that gives off a peppery flavor when consumed. The delicious leaves of these plants are often used in salads. Each herb will grow to a mature height of about 6 to 12 inches tall and can be harvested in about 21 to 40 days, depending on how large you would like the leaves. Baby Arugula leaves tend to have more flavor. The plants are best grown in cooler climates, making them perfect for Northern Gardeners.

Arugula is an annual herb which grows quickly from freshly harvested seeds. The plants mature within a few short weeks and the seeds can be sown every other week, or every 2 weeks for a harvest that lasts all season. If allowed to bolt, (go to seed) you can collect fresh seeds at the end of the season to regrow the following year.

Try mixing Arugula with a number of additional greens for all sorts of flavors. Dandelions, spinach, nasturtium and other flowering herbs and plants have similar, peppery flavoring as well.

Sowing The Seed

Arugula is best started outdoors, when the weather is cool and all danger of frost has passed. This is typically in the early Spring / late Autumn. Clear the sowing area of all unwanted plant life, creating small rows. Sow the seeds at a depth of 1/16" under topsoil so that the seeds can receive direct sunlight. This is crucial to the germination process, so do not bury the seeds. Check "Germination and Growth" for additional spacing information and growth habits.

Growing Conditions

Arugula will thrive in temperatures of at least 45F to 60F and will tolerate an area that receives full sunlight. The soil should be fertile and rich in organic matter, but also well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting to provide an ample amount of moisture, until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Arugula seeds will typically take anywhere between 7 to 14 days to successfully germinate, if conditions are ideal. The plants grow to a height of roughly 6 to 12 inches tall, and can spread about 1 foot wide. Space Arugula 4 to 6 inches apart, in rows spaced roughly 18 inches apart from one another. Enjoy baby leaves in as little as 21 to 40 days after sprouts appear.
