Description

Grow a garden filled with the delightful California Bluebell, from freshly harvested Phacelia campanularia seeds. California Bluebell will produce gorgeous, blue flowers atop low growing, attractive green foliage. The stems of these graceful flowering plants are burgundy red, growing to a mature height of roughly 8 to 20 inches tall. California Bluebell wildflowers, as you can probably guess, originate in much of the western United States, in and around the state of California. They are known to thrive in dry, arid conditions, where most plant life is scarce, however they are also adaptive as well.

California Bluebell is categorized as an annual flowering plant, meaning the plants will grow quickly from seed, bloom profusely through the spring & summer months and later die with the first frost. The plants are known to readily self seed, so if the seeds fall to the bare ground beneath, new plants will grow the following growing season.

California Bluebell can be used as a cut flower, in floral arrangements and vases. The plants are also used to attract the ever decreasing population of honeybees as well. They can be grown in masses, in flower beds, along borders or in a naturalized setting as well. Their short growth also makes them great for pots & containers.

Sowing The Seed

California Bluebell flower seeds are best sown directly outdoors or in the garden when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted weeds and other plant life. Turn the soil, or replace it with fresh, new sowing medium. Sprinkle your Phacelia campanularia flower seeds directly to the surface of the soil, covering them very lightly with 1/16 inch of topsoil.

Growing Conditions

Phacelia campanularia flower seeds & plants will require an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day. They will also need temperatures of at least 55F to 60F to thrive. Provide a soil that is poor & sandy, or rich & fertile, just make sure that it is well draining. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting so that the soil is kept moist, but never soaked. Phacelia plants will do well in drought like conditions.

Germination & Growth

Your flower seeds will begin to show signs of life within 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of about 8 to 20 inches tall and can be spaced anywhere from 8 to 12 inches apart from one another. California Bluebell will produce gorgeous blue flowers all through the summer. Their short growth habit makes them perfect for pots & containers. They are also popularly used as a cut flower as well.

These are such happy plants and easily grown in the garden! In early spring, I direct sowed and kept damp, and was rewarded with excellent germination and gorgeous flowers. The picture doesn’t do it justice, the brilliant blue is just like velvet. Absolutely love these! Grown in Texas, 8b garden.
