Description

Grow Annual Ice plant from fresh Dorotheanthus bellidiformis flower seeds. Annual Ice Plant will produce beautiful, low growing plants that reach a mature height of 4 to 8 inches tall. The flowers come in a plethora of colors including orange, pink, purple, red, white and yellow. Because of its short, trailing growth, the Annual Ice Plant will make a great groundcover. It is best grown in flower beds, borders, along walkways & driveways and is even popularly grown in pots and containers as well.

Because this Ice Plant is categorized as an annual flowering plant, it will grow quickly, bloom profusely and later die with the first frost. Its seeds can be collected or allowed to drop to the bare ground beneath so that it can regrow the following year.

Sowing The Seed

Annual Ice Plant can be established directly outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Stratifying the seeds for a good 3 to 4 weeks prior to sowing will increase their viability. Clear your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and weeds, turning the soil or replacing it with new soil. Scatter the seeds directly to the surface of the soil, allowing direct light to reach the seeds. This is crucial for optimal growth and germination.

Growing Conditions

Annual Ice Plant will thrive in an area that consists of full sunlight for the majority of the day. Temperatures should be kept at around 70F. The soil should be fairly rich to moderate and will need to be kept moist, but also well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a mist setting or spray bottle until germination has occurred.

Germination & Growth

Annual Ice Plant seeds will begin to germinate within roughly 7 to 21 days after sowing. The plants reach a mature height of about 4 to 8 inches tall and can be spaced about 4 inches apart. The plants will make a great groundcover and can be seen in may borders as well as pots & containers.
