Carpet of Snow Alyssum, scientifically known as Lobularia maritima, is a charming plant that graces gardens with its delicate, snow-white flowers. These blooms form a lush carpet-like cover, making it an ideal choice for edging, ground cover, or filling in gaps in rock gardens. The flowers not only provide a visually appealing soft white hue but also emit a sweet fragrance, enhancing any garden's aesthetic and sensory experience.

This tender perennial is renowned for its ease of growth, thriving in full sun to partial shade and preferring well-drained soil. Its low-maintenance nature makes it perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners. Carpet of Snow Alyssum is particularly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a beneficial addition for those interested in supporting local wildlife. While it can survive mild winters, in colder climates, it's often treated as an annual due to its sensitivity to frost, requiring replanting each spring.

GROWERS TIP

Alyssum is extremely easy to grow from seed and can be started indoors, or directly outdoors. If starting indoors, sow 3 to 5 seeds per starter pot, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Transplant or direct sow in the spring when temperatures are at least 65°F and all danger of frost has passed. Once the plants are well established they are quite drought resistant and deer resistant as well.
