Description

Grow this delightful flower, known as Baby's Breath, from freshly harvested Gyposophila elegans seeds. Baby's Breath will take your breath away with their small, 1.5 inch flowers, atop foliage that grows to a mature height of roughly 8 to 18 inches tall. Popularly grown for use as a cut flower, Baby's Breath is the perfect addition to floral arrangements and bouquets as well. They can be used freshly cut, or dried.

Baby's breath is categorized as an annual flowering plant, meaning the plants will grow quickly from seed, bloom profusely through the summer months and later die with the first frost. They are easily established from seed and require little to no maintenance once they are mature. Add this lovely annual wildflower to your flower beds, or in a naturalized setting as they look best when sown by the masses.

Sowing The Seed

Baby’s Breath is best established directly outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted plant life & weeds. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, covering them very thinly with 1/16” of topsoil. The seeds will require a bit of direct sunlight to germinate properly, so avoid burrying the seeds too far under the surface.

Growing Conditions

Baby’s Breath will thrive in an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day. These plants can also tolerate partial shade and should be grown in temperatures of at least 70F or more. The soil should be rich and filled with organic matter, just make sure that it is also well drained. To improve drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with mist.

Germination & Growth

Your Baby’s Breath seeds will begin to germinate in roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing. The plants will grow to a mature height of 8 to 18 inches tall and can be spaced roughly 10 inches apart from one another. These popular flowers are mainly grown for use as a cut flower, in floral arrangements and bouquets as well.

My daughter has been trying to grow these all summer. She has followed directions and advice she finds online, and the seeds have sprouted little tiny green sprouts that do no grow any more, but just die. She bought more, thinking maybe it was just the particular packet that was bad, but the new ones are the same. I gave it two stars, because maybe it doesnt work in our house or maybe the packets we got were just bad, and maybe it would work next time but honestly, I think its simply too hit or miss to try again from this company.
