**Candystripe Zinnias** are known for their vibrant, bi-colored petals, typically featuring stripes of red or pink against a white or yellow background, resembling candy canes or old-fashioned candy stripes. These flowers are part of the *Zinnia elegans* family, prized for their large, showy blooms. Their petals are often thick and velvety, giving them a distinct, almost artificial look that stands out in gardens.

First appearing in the 19th century, Candystripe Zinnias were the result of selective breeding efforts to create unique and visually striking varieties. Gardeners and florists quickly adopted them for their beauty and the cheerful contrast they bring to floral arrangements. Today, they're not just garden favorites but also popular in cut flower bouquets, adding a touch of nostalgia and whimsy. Their easy cultivation and resistance to pests make them a go-to choice for both novice and seasoned gardeners.

GROWERS TIP

Zinnias are native to South America, which means they will thrive in the heat and sunlight. Plant them on the edge of your garden to allow them to spread out when pinched back. The term “pinching back” simply means to snip the zinnia at a lower leaf node prior to it flowering. This will allow the plant to spend more energy in creating multiple branches, thus rewarding you with more blooms later on. As a side note, zinnias become more drought tolerant as they grow stronger.
