Description
Our Rainbow Tomato Blend consists of 10 to 14 various Tomatoes ranging in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colors. Tomatoes are both juicy and delicious and have many uses in the kitchen. Whether you are making homemade spaghetti sauce, slicing a tomato for a sandwich or burger, or just eating them as a snack, they make for a refreshing vegetable at any time of the year. So why not grow your very own garden filled with delicious tomatoes?
This mixture is filled with any number of the following varieties listed below. Because the mixture contains such a diverse collection of seed, we cannot guarantee that every variety will be included in each packet however.
Germinated quickly not growing well for a few weeks, but are now growing strong and have flowered.
All the seeds I planted have germinated so far! Hopefully I'll get a nice variety of different tomatoes.
3/13/21 About a 90% germination rate after 7 days. Expecting to see more in the next 7 days. I use a Burpee Self watering Seed Starting kit and 12 hours under grow lights with great success. Will update with more pictures as they grow.
After advice from reviews, I tried to separate the seeds visually into S-M-L and Dark, in hopes that the dark ones (which were also large) would be your black large varieties. I planted about 20 of the large/medium white seeds and all of the dark seeds. Only two of the dark seeds sprouted, but nearly all of the lighter larger seeds are flourishing under my grow light. So, 20% germ on the dark seeds and 95% of the lighter larger seeds. Thats still pretty decent.I wish I had access to a seed photo repository so that I could identify what they were - or if the company would use food coloring to separate them out, but I understand that we are getting them cheaper and together because theyre the leftover and thus, why would the company expend more effort for something that is really just trying to break even with leftover?I mailed my second extra packet of seeds to my father in another state to see what his much greener thumb can accomplish and Ill update this review when I know more (prob. Aug?). (Update: his tomatoes are chugging along just fine in the desert!)Just buy these, theyre like a little covid adventure for those of us who cant travel. ;)Update May 1st: we have blossoms! Sadly, some of them are bunched tight together so separating seeds out by size didnt eliminate cherry varieties from my efforts (I was trying for slicers only), so keep that in mind. At least I was able to eliminate the tiny Tims (which I assume are the super small seeds). And who doesnt love munching on cherry tomatoes when theyre working in the garden?Update (almost June): dude, these things are huuuuuuge. Im about to hit a heat spell next week (106F if you can imagine it) and I have several plants ready to open for pollination, so using shade cloth each afternoon (update: I also bought an electric toothbrush and go outside 3x a day to pollinate; its been working well so far). Im also updating my rating to a 4. These are such strong plants, I can tell their parent plants at the seed company were super healthy too, and thats all we can really ask. Once I get actual fruit I imagine my rating will be a glowing 5.Update (again): okay I do have a complaint about these. The vendor should really be marking the seeds that are determinants or leave them out of the packet entirely. Its impossible to know whether you should prune or not, and now I have giant bushy tomatoes because Im too scared to prune. So Im finalizing my review at a 3.5. Theyre great seeds, just very poor packaging. Also: duuuuude, why dont you list the tomato types on the packet itself? Do you know how many times Ive had to come to this stupid post just to be reminded of what Im (possibly) growing? Super annoying.Last update (promise): the yellow brandy wines were the winner this past year. Nothing could kill them and thats saying a lot since I live in super hot Sacramento/9b. I just repurchased the same packet because I forgot to save seeds after harvesting, oops. But Im also starting them ridiculously early (next week) to see if I can get tomatoes by May since I have a horrible July climate here.
