Peppermint Stick Zinnias are known for their unique bicolor blooms, often displaying vibrant red and white stripes, reminiscent of candy canes. This striking pattern makes them a standout in any garden, attracting both gardeners and pollinators alike. The flowers are large, typically ranging from 2 to 4 inches across, and sit atop upright stems that can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet.

Originally developed through selective breeding, Peppermint Stick Zinnias belong to the species Zinnia elegans, renowned for its diversity in flower shapes and colors. These plants are not only ornamental but also have a rich history in cut flower arrangements, bringing joy indoors with their festive appearance. Their ease of growth and resistance to pests make them a favorite for both novice and seasoned gardeners.

GROWERS TIP

Zinnias are native to South America, which means they will thrive in the heat and sunlight. Plant them on the edge of your garden to allow them to spread out when pinched back. The term “pinching back” simply means to snip the zinnia at a lower leaf node prior to it flowering. This will allow the plant to spend more energy in creating multiple branches, thus rewarding you with more blooms later on. As a side note, zinnias become more drought tolerant as they grow stronger.
