Description

Populate your garden with the beautiful Scarlet Sage / Salvia wildflower, grown from freshly harvested Salvia coccinea wildflower seeds. Scarlet Sage will produce gorgeous, fiery red blooms through the summer months. The small, 1 inch flowers open up along their slender, upright stems. Each plant will grow to a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall, displaying its green, triangle shaped leaves for a few weeks until they begin to flower. Scarlet Sage is known to attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, honeybees and hummingbirds as well.

Salvia is categorized as a tender perennial flowering plant. Perennials, such as Scarlet Sage, will establish a deep root system the first year of growth. If temperatures aren't too cold during the winter months, the plants can survive, returning the following year to flower once again. If temperatures typically drop below freezing, you may have to reestablish the plants from seed. Scarlet Sage wildflowers can self seed at the end of each season, or you can collect the seeds for planting the next season as well.

Scarlet Sage is among one of the easiest wildflowers to establish directly in the garden. Many gardeners use them in masses for a field of gorgeous red blooms. They can also be added to flower beds, borders, along walkways, driveways and more. As explained above, Scarlet Sage will attract a large variety of beneficial insects, so they are also a great pick in many insectaries and butterfly gardens as well. Check out our Salvia / Sage category for additional varieties to combine with the Scarlet Sage wildflower!

Sowing The Seed

Scarlet sage can be sown indoors or directly outdoors. They are most commonly established directly outdoors in the early Spring, when the weather has warmed to at least 75F, and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by clearing your sowing area of all unwanted plant life and weeds. Turn the dirt, or lay down a fresh sowing medium in its place. Scatter the seeds to the bare ground, lightly patting the seeds into place. Scarlet Sage will require a bit of direct sunlight to properly germinate.

Growing Conditions

Grow Scarlet Sage in an area of direct sunlight. The plants will need the heat of the sun to successfully germinate and thrive, so as mentioned prior, temperatures of at least 75F are best. Choose a soil that is average to fertile, but also well drained. If you are dealing with an area that contains hard, compact soil, try adding a light compost to increase drainage. Water the seeds daily, with a mist setting, until germination has successfully occurred.

Germination & Growth

Salvia will typically take anywhere between 7 and 21 days to germinate, if optimal conditions are met. The plants will reach a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall, and can be spaced about 12 inches apart from one another. The scarlet red flowers will bloom through the summer months, attracting an array of beneficial insects to the garden. Plant directly in the garden, in flower beds, borders, pots & containers or by the masses in a meadow.
