Description

Grow Iceland Poppies from freshly harvested Papaver nudicaule wildflower seeds. Iceland Poppy flowers will produce gorgeous, paper like blooms in an array of colors including, yellow, red, orange & white. The blooms themselves range in size from 2 to 3 inches in diameter, displaying yellow centers. The plants themselves will grow to a mature height of roughly 12 to 24 inches tall and have thin, furry stems. The foliage is also equally attractive.

Iceland Poppy flowers are categorized as a tender perennial flowering plants in warmer regions and annual flowering plants in cooler regions. Perennial plants will establish a deep root system that allow the plants to return the following growing season if temperatures aren't too harsh. Annual plants will grow quickly, bloom for a few short weeks, later wilting with the first frost. Even if you reside in the North where temperatures are cooler, Iceland Poppy flowers are known to readily self seed. They will drop their seeds to the bare ground beneath, only to reemerge the following season as a new plant.

The beautiful and colorful Iceland Poppy is best sown in masses, creating carpets of gorgeous blooms. They can be established in flower beds & raised beds, along borders and in naturalized settings & fields as well. They are known to attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, ladybugs and even hummingbirds as well. Iceland Poppy wildflowers are fairly easy to establish from seed and don't need excessive care. They can be combined with a number of other Poppies from our Poppies seed category.

Sowing The Seed

Iceland Poppy seeds grow best with a period of stratification, 4 weeks prior to sowing. Papaver flower seeds are also best sown directly outdoors, when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. The root system of these popular flowers is pretty weak until they are matured, so transplanting is out of the question. Remove all unwanted plant life from your sowing area, turning the dirt, or replacing it with fresh soil. Sprinkle the seeds to the surface of the soil, on a calm day, making sure that no high winds can blow the tiny seeds away. Do not cover your Poppy Iceland flower seeds as they require light to germinate properly. Pat down the soil to keep the seeds in place.

Growing Conditions

Iceland Poppy flowers will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day and thrive in temperatures of around 70F. The soil should be well drained and can be average to rich, although it prefers sandy soils most. Areas that consist of hard, compact soil will retain too much moisture, so mixing a light compost is recommended for improved drainage. Water daily, with a mist setting, allowing the seeds to receive an adequate amount of moisture, without drowning the seeds or causing them to wash away.

Germination & Growth

Seeds will begin to germinate within 10 to 20 days after sowing. The plants will reach a mature height of around 12 to 24 inches tall and a width of 18 to 30 inches wide. They can be spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart from one another. Bishop's Flower is popularly grown for its flowers and long, thin stems, which are mainly used in floral arrangements and in bouquets.
