Dandelion is often times seen as a pesky weed, but what you may not realize is, dandelion is in fact a nutritious herb. The benefits of consuming dandelion are improved digestion and alleviation of upset stomach.
Dandelion is often seen in empty fields, along highways and most commonly seen in our own backyards. It is usually considered to be a pesky weed, but what you may not know is, Dandelions are actually delicious herbs that many people grow in their herb gardens! There are many uses for Dandelion plants, some are medicinal and often times the leaves and flowers of dandelions can be eaten in salads, or used as a garnish.
A Dandelion herb plant will reach a mature height of anywhere between 8 to 18 inches tall. The leaves are tender and the stems are hollow. Dandelion flowers sit at the very top of the very tightly formed plants and are roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Grown as a perennial, the Dandelion plant will grow very quickly, bloom, but die with the first frost to return the year after if the roots are kept in tact. Seeds can be collected, or fall to the bare ground to regrow the following season.
Chicory has light periwinkle-colored flowers that are similarly shaped to daisies. The blossoms are about .75 to 1.5 inches across, and the petals have a delicately toothed outer edge. The plant itself has tough, woody, hairy stems. The long, narrow, serrated leaves are a dusty green. If you break or cut the chicory plant, it will 'bleed' out a milky, bitter sap.
Chicory plants have a wide range of growth size, depending on growing conditions, and can be anywhere from 10 inches to over 3 feet tall. The stems on which the flowers grow can be a couple of feet taller yet, up to 5 feet.
Garnet Stem, Italian Dandelion will produce deep green leaves with red colored stems. The leaves of these delicious plants can be used in salads to add a bright contrasting color. Believe it or not, they are also popularly grown to feed pet tortoises & rabbits as well, its one of our best sellers for this purpose.
Garnet Stem, Italian Dandelion is easily established from seeds and is grown as an annual herb. The plants will grow quickly, producing delicious foliage for harvesting, and will later die with the first frost. They do fairly well in moderately cooler climates and warmer regions as well.
