Description

Grow a garden filled with Foxglove flowers, from freshly harvested Digitalis purpurea flower seeds. Excelsior Mixture will produce flowering plants that stand to roughly 24 to 36 inches tall. The stems are erect, displaying green foliage near the bottom half. The upper half of the plants will display clusters of tubular, bell shaped blooms. Excelsior Mixture is made up of various colors, such as purple, cream, pink, white & yellow. They are known to attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden with their gorgeous flowers, such as butterflies, bumblebees & honeybees as well.

Categorized as a biennial flowering plant, Excelsior Mixture will grow quickly from seed, establishing a rather deep root system. The plants then wilt with the first frost, to return the next season, often times flowering the second year of growth. Although biennials such as Foxglove only live for an extended season, it is possible to regrow them the following year, by collecting fresh seeds at the end of its lifespan. Foxglove plants can also drop their seeds to the bare ground beneath, just as they would in a natural setting.

Excelsior Mixture will go great in the garden as a border plant, along fences & as a backdrop plant. Planting other shorter flowers in front of it will create a dramatic blend of beautiful colors. Foxglove, Excelsior Mixture may produce beautiful flowers, but they should also be planted with care. Foxglove flowers, leaves and seeds can be toxic to humans & most animals if consumed. It may be best to plant these flowers in an area where pets, such as dogs and cats can't really mess with them.

Sowing The Seed

Foxglove seeds are extremely tiny, so be careful when opening the seed package. They are best established directly outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. Begin by turning the soil, or replacing it with a fresh sowing medium. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, so that they remain visible. Lightly press them into the surface, but avoid covering. Some direct light is necessary for proper germination to occur.

Growing Conditions

Foxglove plants thrive in an area of full sunlight to light shade. They prefer temperatures of around 65F and require a rather rich soil, or sowing medium. You must also make sure that the soil is well drained as well. Adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil, will increase drainage. Water the seeds daily with a mist setting so that you do not disturb the seeds. This also prevents overwatering.

Germination & Growth

Foxglove seeds can take anywhere between 7 and 21 days to properly germinate. The plants grow to a mature height of roughly 24 to 36 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Excelsior Mixture will produce beautiful & colorful, bell shaped blooms, in shades of pink, yellow, cream, white and purple. They are poisonous to most animals and humans if consumed, so be careful in choosing an area where they won't cause harm.
