Description

Grow China Aster, Powder Puff Mixture from fresh Callistephus chinensis flower seeds. Powder Puff Mixture will produce a beautiful blend of double petaled blooms, in shades of pink, purple, rose, white & violet. The flowers are roughly 3 inches in diameter and are accented with a beautiful, bright yellow center. China Aster, Powder Puff Mixture plants grow to a mature height of 12 to 36 inches tall, baring fairly long slender stems, making it perfect for use as a cut flower. Use in floral arrangements and bouquets.

Grown as an annual flowering plant, China Asters will grow quickly, bloom profusely, later dying with the first frost. The beautiful blooms won't only attract onlookers, it also attracts an array of beneficial insects as well. Butterflies and bumblebees will cling to these colorful flowers as the blossom into the fall months of October and November. Seeds can be collected from your flowers as the season comes to an end allowing you to regrow fresh China Asters the year after.

China Asters can get a bit of height on them so they are best sown as a background plant. Sow them along borders, such as driveways, fences, walkways and flower beds. They can also be sown by the masses for an explosion of delightful flowers all summer long.

Sowing The Seed

China Aster seeds are best started indoors, in a controlled environment for the best success rate. Sow the small, golden-brown seeds in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost. Scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, sowing 3 to 4 seeds per pot. Cover thinly with 1/16" of topsoil as the seeds will require direct sunlight to germinate properly.

Growing Conditions

China Aster seeds will grow best in an area that consists of full sunlight to light shade. Temperatures can be kept at around 70F to 75F in an area that contains rich, fertile soil. You will also want to make sure that your sowing medium or soil is well drained. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Provide moisture when the soil becomes dry, until germination occurs.

Germination & Growth

Your China Aster seeds will begin germinating in as little as 7 to 10 days after sowing. The plants will mature to a height of roughly 12 to 36 inches tall and can be spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart. China Asters make a wonderful cut flower and can be seen in many floral arrangements and bouquets as well. They will also attract an array of beneficial insects to the garden, such as butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds and ladybugs.
